Story Behind the Song
The great writer Theodore Sturgeon was asked why he wrote Science Fiction when 90% of it was crud. He replied 90% of everything is crud. Why bother even trying when it most is crud, the rest is not noticed and it all falls apart anyway. The urge tp create can not be ignored, so rather than fight it, you may as well try. If you can achieve that 10% of excellence, then it is worth the effort of creation.

They asked Ted
Why you write that stuff
And Ted said
10%’s good enough
G F
It can’t all be great
If it works, it’s Jake
So gimme a break
Sometimes a story takes wing
F G
Most my friends aren’t even alive
Like Arne Saknussen, they left a trail to find
They’ve touched my heart and soul
Challenged my mind
Break
C B F
When I get paid I spend my money on books
You can eat when you’re hungry
Who cares how you look
G F C
Won’t stand in a line, travel sea, sky or land
Won’t leave the house without a book in my hand
C B
So why try
Anything, anyway
When it’s all been done on TV
G F
It all falls apart
So why even start
There’s no choice in art
But to give it a try
F G
A Texas farmer was heard to decry
Too much book learnin’ it’s a sin and a crime
I said too many books, too little time
least when I die, I won't smell like swine
