Story Behind the Song
"Leilani" was written for a friend who I was hanging out with at Polihale beach on Kauai. I was playing the music then, and after hearing the instrumental, she asked me to write her a song. "Leilani" was her name, but the song is about unconditional love, and is sung to Mother Nature.
Lyrics
White wave breaks on gray water.
My little boat, little boat, tossed on the sea.
Got no rudder, it's a broken, and my sails in tatters.
And I hear you, Oh I hear you ma, when you say, to me, it doesn't matter.
Oh, oh, oh Leilani, on the beach where we met, at Polihale.
Spirit house by the ocean, spirit house by the sea, spirit house by the mountain, that's where, I met, Leilani.
White wave breaks on gray water.
Little boat, little boat, tossed on her beach.
I no answer when she speak, me no look above her feet.
I be humble, I be meek, when she's washing over me.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh , oh, oh, oh, oh, oh (ab lib singing)
Oh oh, oh, oh, oh Leilani, at the beach where we met, Polihale.
Spirit house by the ocean, spirit house by the sea, spirit house by the mountain, that's where, I met, Leilani.
That's where, I met, Leilani. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Leilani, Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Leilani, Leilani, Leilani, Leilani.
