Story Behind the Song
I'd like to thank Bill for performing this song. Whenever my Dad shows concern and caring for me and I thank him, he says, "That's what I'm supposed to do. That's what I want to do. I'll always be Daddy. That will never change." After listening to a talk on how to show greater love to our children, I realized how much attention I was paying. I laughed to myself as I thought how most all my children are grown now. Then my Dad's words came to me. Yes, I thought, you never stop being a parent. The song started taking shape in my head. I feel like there are two ways the song comes across. One is where parenthood can be eternal and continue past this life. The other is that whether or not we are blessed with a good father in this life, we all have a kind, loving Heavenly Father. He is eternal. He has been, is, and will be our Father forever. We will always be His children, and He wants us to return home to Him.
Lyrics
I'LL ALWAYS BE DADDY
by Linda McKeeth © 4/13/02
The speaker spoke of
How to show one's child more love.
I listened intently,
But my child was grown, you see.
Yet, he'll always be my child.
He'll always be my child to me.
He'll always be my child.
I'll always be Daddy.
I remember where I first heard this.
And I remember how.
I'd just turned twenty-six.
It means more to me now.
Dad said, "You'll always be my child.
You'll always be my child to me.
You'll always be my child.
I'll always be Daddy."
I'd come to my dad for help,
But I said, "I shouldn't need your help."
He said, "I guess I feel
The same way my dad felt."
You'll always be my child.
You'll always be my child to me.
You'll always be my child.
I'll always be Daddy.
My friend lost his child,
But he said humbly, meek and mild,
"As his hand slipped from my grasp
To another's it did pass."
"I heard, he'll always be my child.
He'll always be my child to me.
He'll always be my child.
I'll always be Daddy."
When I take my last breath,
The last thing I am sure I'll hear
In a heavenly voice,
Whispered in my ear.
You'll always be my child.
You'll always be my child to me.
You'll always be my child.
I'll always be Daddy.
