Story Behind the Song
This is one of the few songs that we wrote before the recording session. I was in training to be a Naval Nuclear Power Plant Operator when the Persian Gulf War broke out. My best friend went AWOL and I considered doing the same. When a man faces going to war, one cannot help but contemplate his own mortality and the value of life. I knew that I wasn't willing to kill or be killed so that industrialized nations could maintain cheap sources of oil. Fossil fuels will run out sooner or later. If we wish to keep this industrial machine moving, we need to be vigorously exploring energy alternatives. After serving as a nuclear power plant operator, I am convinced that nuclear energy is not the solution. I'd like to see people start living closer to nature with a civilization not so dependent on industrialization. I don't see it happening unless we are forced to by dwindling energy supplies. I dream of a world with luscious forests and free flowing rivers. I love the natural world and wish that I knew how to survive in the wilderness that still remains.
