This song was written as an ballad for Veterans/Remembrance Day, and is quite popular with the Legions across Ontario Canada. The production is sure to give you a "chill" from the lyrics to the erie sound of lonely drums fading away. If you're going to listen, dim the lights, close your eyes, and listen until the last drum is heard.

    Story Behind the Song
I wrote "A Soldier's Memories" for a poetry contest while attending High School in 1993, but my intentions for my work went far beyond the contest. I took that opportunity to write a song rather than a poem because as a song, it might have a better chance to touch someone's heart and trigger a memory that should not have been forgotten. Though many of us have never been close to or involved in a war, we should never, ever forget how the bravery of many men and women made way for the freedom of many others. With this opportunity at hand to reflect, we should deeply embrace the thought of where or who we might be today if it wasn't for those who gave their heart, their soul, and in some cases, their life. We really must never forget.

    Lyrics
Alone on the beach there stood a man,
Staring out at the sea from his native land,
How violent the sea looked that night,
As he remembered those who suffered the fight.
As the sky gre dark and the wind grew cold,
He remembered the things that were left untold.
The secrets they kept, the soldiers who fell,
For the cause of a country they went through hell.

    Chorus
But they fought for freedom, the freedom of a country.
They fought for love, the love of a country,
For the land of the free.
The pride of our East and West,
From coast to coast, from sea to shining sea.

As the rain poured down and the fog rolled in,
Life in the trench came back to him.
As the lightning flashed and the thunder cracked,
Memories of the bombs came rolling back.
On his chest is a poppy that he wears with pride,
In remebrance of those who suffered and died.
Life in the trench, disease in the air,
A life some will never know 'cause they weren't there.
