Story Behind the Song
I was making fun of this girl in college after she told me she had gone to crossing guard camp as a kid. Before long it hit me that when the other 6 grade crossing guards were sick, I was the one they called in to replace them. So that made me the "substitute" crossing guard. Thus was born the first line of the song...
The main idea of the song came from C.S. Lewis' 3rd book in his space trilogy, "That Hideous Strenght." In it, the main character realizes that all his life has been spent trying to break into the next cocentric social or career circle--always wanting to be on the inside. He came to the conclusion that there was always another circle, no matter how far in one went.
Lyrics
Jonny was a 6th grade
substitute crossing guard
Overweight and buck teeth,
oh he tried real hard
to fit into the circle
but he was much too square
Jonny grew a little
and lost some weight
Now the tallest boy
in the 7th grade
He was looking over the shoulder
of the people in the circle
that kept him out there, outside their...
Circle, so many circles,
Thinking you've found the last
to find another within
Circles, so many circles
Always another and a little harder
to break your way
To the circle
Jonny got his teeth fixed
and quit wearing hand me downs
He told some jokes and gained clout
as the eighth grade clown
The circle like his jokes
He made them all laugh
Jonny waved goodbye
second-rate pals
Social status was
his only rationale
He was now rubbing shoulders
with the people in the circle
and not looking back, to his old...
Circle, so many circles,
Thinking you've found the last
to find another within
Circles, so many circles
Always another and a little harder
to break your way
To the circle
Bridge
Well jokes that he told at the expense
of those he once called friends
They weren't meant to hurt,
the jokes were just for a laugh
But words can't be taken back
Now he stares at a circle that's smaller
now that he's left
