This jusly famous Pagan hymn is also sung in Christian churches: the words are traditional Shaker - but in many Pagan and Wiccan circles the lyrics to "Lord of the Dance" are also sung (to the music of "Simple Gifts"). Unto Ashes has completely re-written the music for this unique song, and in doing so have created a gorgeous, ethereal winter wonderland. Merry Meet to all Serpents near and far! |

Story Behind the Song
"Suzanna Melendez originally showed me the words to this Pagan / Christian folksong; I didn't know what the music was, so I made up some of my own for the words to live in. Natalia Lincoln made the exquisite keyboard parts; Catherine Bent effortlessly came up with her lucious cello parts. This song was recorded at Regular Fips Studio in New York City. It was the first song that Ericah Hagle recorded with Unto Ashes; her vocals sound amazing here." (Michael Laird)
Lyrics
I danced in the morning when the world was begun,
And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun,
And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth,
At Bethlehem I had my birth.
Dance, then, wherever you may be;
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he.
And I'll lead you all wherever you may be,
And I'll lead you all in the dance, said he.
I danced on a Friday and the sky turned black;
It's hard to dance with the devil on your back;
They buried my body and they thought I'd gone,
But I am the dance and I still go on.
Refrain
They cut me up, and I leapt up high,
I am the life that'll never, never die;
I'll live in you if you'll live in me;
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he.
Refrain
