Story Behind the Song
This song was written after the death of the bands close friend and someone who was also to be the main singer.
In the early days we really wanted for someone who was like Axl Rose, someone who could scream and sing all in the one song. A person, a bloke with bikers shorts and dread locks and we found him all in our close friend Luke.
One day after our rehearsal we had decided to bring Luke formally into the group as we'd listen to his singing and jelly was in our stomachs as we contemplated touring with this fun and outrageous fellow.
We agreed to offer him the gig and I decided to stick with guitars and sing harmonies. I arrived home at around 5 that afternoon and was getting ready for dinner and to make that call.
Instead my phone rang and it was Grant our drummer. He said to me that Luke was just killed that afternoon in a car accident. He was with his girlfriend in the car as they drove out of their residential area. The sun was so bright that they apparantly didn't have the best vision and whilst blinded by the real sun light, they pulled out of the intersection and were struck by oncoming traffic.
He died instantly as that vehicle took his life and his asian girlfriend survived but was left brain damaged for life.
We all cried and yeah I guess that it was very unfortunate for the family and friends as it was to the band and our promise to fans.
There were no words to describe this event of tradgedy. There were no lyrics that we felt were appropriate. There was no point in trying to write words that expressed a feeling that we knew we could put across in just music alone.
As we were approaching one of our earlier demo sessions, I took a break in the rehearsal studio and pulled up a chair with my guitar slapped over the shoulder and we began to talk about the recording and we reminisced about our very close friend.
I had been writing some classical guitar and started to play this special piece on my electric. Grant commented that it would be nice and considerate of us to record that piece to tape and dedicate it to Luke.
I went along with that plan and I thought about piece, the word, piece that he used. I said to call the song A Piece In Memory of, because the sound of the word peace fits both piece as in part thereof and peace as in tranquility, and that I am sure the man who would have sung for us was now living, but living with peace in memory of within us.
