    Story Behind the Song
Walter De La Mare wrote a wonderful poem called 'The Traveller' all about a rider in Jacobean times trying to keep a promise to a ghost... That's where the song came from!

    Lyrics
    The voice
    “Anyone there?” said the traveller
    Knocking at the moonlit door
He and his horse in the darkness
    Of the forest’s ferny floor
Voice from the world of men

A bird flew out from the turret
    Above the travellers head
He smote on the door for a second time
    “Is anyone there?” he said
Voice from the world of men
Voice from the world of men

No one descended to the traveller
No head on the leaf fringed sill
    Leaned and looked
    In his deep grey eyes
    Steady worried and still.

He stood all still in the darkness
    Stillness answered his cry
    Strange in his heart
    He played his part
    ‘Neath dark and leafy sky.

A voice from the world of men
Quiet in the night and when
    The moonlight falls
    On the darkness there
A voice from the world of men.

But they heard his foot on the stone
They knew he was there alone
    Each word he spoke
    ‘Tho no one awoke
The sound and the man were gone.

“Tell them that I came,” he said
Louder as he raised his head
    “Tell them that I came
    That I kept my word
Tell them that I came,” he said.
