    Story Behind the Song
This is my life philosophy in a nutshell. While I admit God's authority and ultimate control, I don't write off the existence of free will and responsibility for one's own destiny.

My high school band director and I once had a lunchtime discussion over religious theory. The topic was whether or not humans have free will, and are they fated to be and do certain things? He mentioned an old "Wildwood" cartoon, in which this issue is addressed. In the comic, canoeing down a stream is given as a metaphor for life: You can go wherever you want between the banks, but when the current (God) wants you moving onto something else, you're moving on.

I'm a lot more laid-back than I used to be regarding issues of fate versus free will. I still don't believe I'm merely a pawn unknowingly acting out a part in some cosmic script. But by the same token, I do believe that God guides us to where we need to be via intangible mechanisms (thoughts, ideas, emotions, etc.).

I wrote the lyrics to this song for a project in my Social Inequality class. They work on both levels: the spiritual and the sociopolitical.

    Lyrics
    See it
I know you don't believe it
But yet you must perceive it
    If only to bereave it
Do not let them deceive you
Or life will surely beat you
    One must accept fate's curse
    Or else rewrite the future
    (Here we go)

    Fear it
Yeah, I know you don't wanna hear it
    But try to cope/endear it
    When setbacks interfere it
    Know you have the will
    Within you
To change the things around you
    Deny that which restrains you
And do not entertain the thought of failure
    (Ha!)

    Know it
Learn, love, live, then control it
And before long you will own it
    Right down to the components
    So be real, reveal, then
    Feel it
There is no need to steal it
    Or otherwise conceal it
From the world, you got your place now come on
    Bring it, sing it

    See it
By now you should believe it
    Or otherwise perceive it
There's no need to bereave it
    And you won't let them
    Deceive you
For life will never beat you
    They don't accept fate's curse
    Those who rewrite the future
