Story Behind the Song
I have a perpetual calendar on my desk at work (a gift from my son, Dan, and his wife, Maria) that has scriptures for every day. The song tells the story of the thoughts provoked by one of these scriptures (St. John 15:12-13). We can lay down our lives by dying for someone in one great act or by spending our lives in daily acts of service to others.

LOVE IN HIS WAY
by Linda McKeeth © 3/27/02
One Spring day, I read this scripture,
St. John 15 verses 12 and 13.
It caused me to pause and to ponder
The things it was saying and what they mean.
"Love one another," thus said the Saviour,
"Love as I have." He went on to explain.
"There's no greater love than when a man
Lays down his life, his life for his friends."
I likely won't be asked to die for another.
Is it enough to feel I would if it came?
Just how do I love, love as the Saviour?
How will I know when my love is the same?
My mind searched about for examples in my life
Of those who showed great love. I'd study and see.
The first ones I thought of were my mother and father.
They've always been great examples to me.
How is it that they had lived their lives loving?
They sacrificed for others and me.
Suddenly, it all seemed so clear now.
It's not just a feeling, but actions it be.
My mother had spent and my father still spending
Their lives for others all around.
You can tell from their actions the Saviour's love
In their hearts, it is found.
We lay down our lives not only by dying.
We lay down our lives by serving each day.
Each day I will try to serve and love others.
Each day I will try to love in His way.
"Love one another," thus said the Saviour,
"Love as I have." He showed us the way.
Each day I will try to serve and love others.
Each day I will try to love in His way.
