Story Behind the Song
Being a Northerner, I'm used to the idea of having snow at Christmas. However, one year I saw a house with a holiday lighting display that featured cowboys and cacti. "How odd!" I thought. But it got me to thinking: "What would Christmas be like if I was somehow stuck in a hot climate during the holidays, unable to get home?" That question brought about "Christmas In Arizona". I hope you like it!
Lyrics
Miss the holly...I miss the ivy...I guess I'm missin' you.
There ain't no reindeer...it's not the same, dear...White Christmas dreams turn blue.
It's not the lack of snow or just the buffalo that make me shed a tear;
Stuck in these Badlands--oh, they're such sad lands for this time of year!
It's CHRISTMAS IN ARIZONA,
Fa la la la la la, deck the halls with cactus!
CHRISTMAS IN ARIZONA,
Fa la la la lizards are so green!
See how the sand is blowing; too bad it isn't snowing!
That's CHRISTMAS IN ARIZONA,
Fa la la la la la la la la.
CHRISTMAS IN ARIZONA,
Santa and his sleigh are pulled by mules, not reindeer!
CHRISTMAS IN ARIZONA,
Where there's never, never, ever Evergreen.
I'd like to put up Christmas lights tomorrow,
But they'd look pretty stupid on saguaro!
It's CHRISTMAS IN ARIZONA,
Fa la la la la la la la la!
Back home the sleighbells are ringing,
the carolers singing, and blizzards close the schools for winter sports.
But in Yuma it's roasting, my poor skin is toasting, and the carolers are caroling in T-shirts and shorts!
It's CHRISTMAS IN ARIZONA,
Fa la la la la la, look at all that limestone!
CHRISTMAS IN ARIZONA,
Fa la la la lots of spiders, too!
I'd like to go back home to celebrate the Yule
But I'm stuck here in this land where snakes and prairie dogs rule!
That's CHRISTMAS IN ARIZONA,
Fa la la la la la la la la!
