Story Behind the Song
I think money and power have totally corrupted American society and politics beyond the point of reform. I don't trust politicians or activists or any of their programs or legislation. The rich and powerful will always be able to find a way around, while the rest of us deal with more red tape and bureaucracy. I'm not advocating apathy here. I think political and social change starts on the streets. Being an activist in your own community working with the poor, volunteering, helping the animals or elderly, this sort of thing makes a real difference to real people every day. But all the politicians and legislation and coalitions of activists are full of shit and blowing hot air. Their proposals are like duct tape on an old shoe. Looks nice and works for a while, but it doesn't do much to stop the rot below the surface.
Lyrics
It's gonna take more than WD-40 to get this system moving
Despite all the protests, this situation's not improving
Bondo and a coat of primer will not conceal the truth
That the rich and corporations are the ones that make the rules
Not gonna change society, by changing politicians
It'll take more than duct tape to fix this fucked up system
Like a band-aid on an amputation, the reforms that you endorse
Are more rules for the rest of us, but for the rich they're not enforced
Politicians and activists with all your good intentions
How come nothing changes after the elections?
You say it's progress, to me it's more restrictions
It'll take more than duct tape, to fix this fucked up system.
