With a title technically too long for MP3.com's limitations, this is a cover of a Mike Doughty song from his album "Skittish." My rendition of "Thank You, Lord, For Sending Me The F Train" attempts to add a full band sound to Doughty's acoustic small rock, and I think I succeeded. This was recorded for a Mike Doughty tribute album which has yet to be released. |
CD: The Music Has Stolen My Language
Credits: Written by Mike Doughty. All instruments/vocals by Victor Andersen. Recorded by Jason Dodson at The Martini Room in Martinez, CA. Mixed by Victor Andersen and William Files. |
Story Behind the Song
This song was written by Mike Doughty, and as such I am ignorant to its true meaning or inspiration. I chose to cover it because it's one of the catchier songs he's written and while playing around with my guitar one day I discovered that I was playing the approximate chords to F Train.
The recording session was comprised of a few takes each of guitar and vocals being recorded in the studio. I then took those tracks back home, sampled the guitar into a loop, added programmed beats, synth bass, and various blips and bleeps. Then I processed the hell out of the vocals and spent about 10 days straight fine-tuning the mix.
What you now hear is the lovingly crafted finished project.
Lyrics
[modified slightly from the original]
the dark is droppping like a spot
of black ink squeezed into a glass of water
and now the crowds are thinning out
into the light down in the subway station
here this train speeds underground
this train speeds under the river
and i will drift back to the slope
some face unlit, stuck there into the incline
where i will sleep off all the noise
the soot accumulated, all my trials
here this train speeds underground
this train speeds under the river
and i thank you
lord almighty up above
for sending out the F train to me
so thankful
for all the unspent love
that i save up in a jar of money
your polaroid is on the wall
stuck in the crack between the door and
door-frame
trapped in the middle of some laugh
some drunken joke some friend of yours was
telling
here this train speeds underground
this train speeds under the river
and i thank you
lord almighty up above
for sending out the F train to me
so greatful
for all the unspent love
that i save up in a jar of money...
