    Story Behind the Song
I wrote this when I lived in Nashville. I met Cajun Jim out by the riverfront downtown and he started in about all he'd had and all he'd lost. That got me to thinking about the same thing in my life. Lots of mistakes and lots of regrets. Memories of my high school days in Georgia made the first verse.

    Lyrics
    "I Regret It" Travis Howard

I was born in a southern town
I grew up proud in a southern family way
I learned to drink from the cup of the white man
We never realized the enemies we made
We fought with weapons made of ignorance and passion
As my generation carried on the curse
And now we'll never know the power of forgiveness
Because no one was willing to go first

    And I regret it
The paths I've taken they make me who I am
And I gotta learn to live with it

Cajun Jim is a homeless man
He can dance like he did when he was 21
On Fridays he hits me up for a dollar
And tells me all about his days in the sun
"I had everything a bum like me could ask for
But the bottle, she kept calling out my name
I think my brother could've saved me but he was aborted
We're just players in a sick and selfish game"

    Chorus
...The streams I've drank from they made me who I am...

Just like my father said and his father before him
Boy don't waste your time trying to take back your sins
Just try and find a path that takes you somewhere better
And don't ever come back this way again

    Chorus
