Story Behind the Song
"Cruising the USA", was started in our small Toyota pickup truck about seven years ago. Mother who was around 92 at the time and my son Jon was 5 and the three of us were singing and writing, Cruising the USA in our little pickup truck. I thought I would finish it while she was still around to hear it. She is now 99 and is gradually shutting down physically. I have had to travel vicariously the last couple of years. My care giving responsibilities has kept me at home . I don't think I have been more than 20 mile away from home the last couple of years other than a brief trip to Gonzales about 50 miles away when my wife totaled her car there. . That is a far cry from my regular jet plane trips through out the world painting. I have more time to develop my creative music potential and to continue my exploratory painting disciplines. Cruising the USA was a needed break from my peace songs. I was intensely aware of the pain and suffering in the Mid-East while writing for Peace. It is dedicated to My Son Christopher Orion and His Lady Fair, Marina. They are planning a trip, somewhat like the song. I leaned on my experiences, shared with my family, driving across the USA many times. These cross country meandering has been a source of joy and revelation that is reflected in this song. If you never drove across this wonderful country, start planning the trip. Play this song on your CD player, the more you play it, the more apt you are to find yourself exploring America from sea to sea.
Lyrics
The open road will set us free ,
If you come along with me
Gonna change our luck in a pick up truck, Come what may
Adventure calling the two of us, to see the USA,
Cruising the USA, Cruising the USA
Leaving behind what I couldn’t find, in my own home town,
At 8 o clock Side walks roll up, at 9 the town shut down.
Not too much for young to do, but roll on out of town.
Cruising the USA Cruising the USA, Cruising the USA
The open road will set us free ,
If you come along with me
We’ll explore America from sea to sea, Explore America being free
The ins and outs, the ups and downs, Where ever a road is found.
Driving over mountain tops , Down through death vally’s lows
Singing our traveling song, where ever we go.
Seeing America, Being American, traveling through this land,
traveling through this land.
Flying over open highways, exploring endless winding byways.
It feels great to be traveling on, singing this traveling song
Seeing America, Being American, traveling through this land
traveling through this land
The open road will set us free ,
If you come along with me
Feeling it’s heartbeat, hearing it’s sounds,
the murmering of it’s rivers, the foundries heart pounds
The excitement of great cities, the whispers of small towns,
The wind in the evergreen, The gentle ocean sounds
The open road will set us free ,
If you come along with me
