Rootsy, but not intentionally muddied up... kinda like grandad's bluejeans, but shorter and not quite as funny. |
Credits: Singing, playing, mixing, and recording are all me. |
Story Behind the Song
Ok, wierd one. Idea came from "Trashman" in Stephen King's "The Stand". The whole, "what the hell was THIS guy thinking.... and where did he think he was going?" kinda thing. It's terribly deep. You'll love it. Promise.
Lyrics
Can't blame dogs for being dogs, he says, as his train is rolling by. He's missed another one, that's fine, he sorta needed time to find his shoe and fix his hair and wipe the paw-prints off his back, as he sets his feet in motion laying pennies on the track.
To warm his bones against the cold, our hero builds a fire. As it burns him down his silhouette plays upon the clouds. In a drunken one-shoed jig, his humanity abounds and he dares every star in the midnight sky to come and knock him down.
He's never stood atop the hill and laid 'em low. He's never figured out just why he's lived his life on the bottom, beneath the grain. He knows down in his hero's heart the gates will widely open and let him in. He'll take his promised seat on-high, on top the world, atop all of them.
His resolve is long and hard, but the road is harder still and it pulls him down like riverbottom and it buries him in the ground. And his eulogy is read like a shadow on the road and it calms his soul like morphine as he soars to Avalon.
