    Story Behind the Song
I wrote this for my father Captain Harry Bleich a skipper in the Merchant Marines, Missing in Action in the winter seas of the North Atlantic, 1942. He received his navy commission Posthumously. There is a verse for JFK and the rest of the song dealing with the Navy was inspired by the crew of the USS Cole. It is a contemporary version of When Johnny come marching home. I use to sing this and other patriotic songs in Greenwich Village in the 60 ies when everybody else was singing anti war songs. I once tried to promote some of these song on a trip across the country. It was bit of an eye opener. I had used JFK in couple of songs and was told in Texas that I should not use JFK references in Patriotic Songs. This was the year before Kennedy was Killed in Dallas. I was unbelievably naive. I was suppose to sing at General Walker’s programs. He was involved in the Oxford incident. I thought that it happened in England. There were some weird things going on there. They made arrangement for my wife and I to stay with a young couple, It seemed as if this dynamic young man was a leader and a recruiter for followers who would have to be totally obedient to his orders. I wondered if Oswald met people like this. He spoke English but had a different accent. Later I went to the FBI as I was being harassed. They told me that If I can’t stand the heat get out of the fire. I went further west and Gene Autry got me job at the stadium Club Where the Angels and the Dodgers shared the stadium. Gene Autry and his wife were guest on Herb Atlas’s Yacht that I crewed on. We almost sunk in bad storm in the Gulf Stream coming back from Cuba. I ended up flying back with Gene and his wife in a small Chalk seaplane from Bimini, to report to the draft board in Florida. My song have come full circle and my range of life experiences hopefully will grace them with the wisdom of age and experiences.

    Lyrics
When Johnny Comes marching home again Hurrah Hurrah
We’ll give him a hearty welcome then Hurrah, Hurrah
The men will cheer, the boys will shout the ladies they will all turn out.
We’ll all be free when Johnny comes marching home
But John ‘s not coming home again, He gone, He’s gone.
He gave his life that freedom could live on live on
The Torch of Freedom from young John’s hand, is handed down to every man
That we’ll all be free when America goes marching on
Though John is dead and gone, He still lives on
On in the hearts of all men, The flame burns on
The torch of freedom from young John’s hand is handed down to every man
That we’ll all be free, when America goes marching on.
The drums they tolled a mournful dirge, when the caissons rolled that day,
Followed by a Jet black Horse rider less that day.
Young John fought and young John died, that the cause of freedom could survive,
That we’ll all be free when Johnny goes marching on.
Now in the new millennium, It happened once again.
The sword of hate in the hands of fate, Scarred our hearts again
The torch of freedom from our sailors hands will be handed down to every man.
Out on every ocean, Keeping the seas free, America goes sailing on.
The flags that flew at half mast, will fly high in the sky again
Raised high by the courage and sacrifice of our sailing women and men.
The torch of freedom from our sailors hands will be handed down to every man.
Out on every ocean, Keeping the seas free, America goes sailing on.
Out from a plane, 5 coffins came, in the early mourning mist of pain
Flag draped coffins did reveal , our loss was heaven’s gain,
Though they’re gone they still sail on, Out on the evening tide.
Out on every ocean, Keeping the seas free, America goes sailing on!
