Story Behind the Song
In Assisi, while painting in the hills where St. Francis lived, I was enthralled in some way but disappointed in others. There were Nuns. There were Franciscan Brothers walking and praying. There was the sound of young voices raised in song-filled praise. It was wonderful, but there was no signs of animal or bird life. . I kept painting and looking for some form of wildlife or feathered friends. I stopped painting and started shifting the pebbles at my feet looking for an ant. At that moment three white doves flew into the branches of a tree that was in my painting so I painted two of them in, as one was in a higher branch that was not in my painting. I called the painting "Doubting Thomas." I had a small notebook with me and I wrote the start of “ Three White Doves,” there on the spot. It was finished years later in 2001. . The more I have ventured into the reality of current world situations the more necessary it has been to retreat into the beauty created within my paintings and music. It was as if I was being polarized by opposites. There has been a deeper serenity, softer harmonies, gentler colors, rest and respite to nourish a rising passion to free myself and others from the bonds of silence and inaction in addressing violence. I make efforts at infusing my paintings with colors charged with positive energy and life. I try to infuse my music with the same positive gentle energy.
I am not a musical virtuoso creating great composition. I am just a 66 year old child exploring music and my spiritual songs are a form of simple prayer and worship. I hope that God would find my unschooled efforts pleasurable. I love harmonies and have explored contemporary chanting as meditation. I will sometime lay vocal track over track until the words disappear and become inaudible and become more like the sound of the singing wind. There is something lost in comprehension of the words but there is something else gained in the rising spirit of the endeavor. My greatest pleasure in singing my spirituals is found singing them in seclusion, It could be in my studio. It could be out doors while painting. I recall one late afternoon skimming over the Bahamas Banks in a Boston Whaler with the throttle wide open Singing above the roar of a 90 hose power Evinrude “ Holy God we praise Thy Name.” One of my more special memories was the day I found myself alone in a deserted Mission, Mission San Antoine. I sang the Hail Mary that I put to music. It was like being in the presence of God in a special way, one on one. We know God is everywhere but how often do we really feel His Presence? You can if you try. I will share more of my spiritual expressions with you in the future...
Lyrics
One day while painting above Assisi Town
hills of Umbria where peace is found.
I could hear church bells ringing,
Guitar strumming, Children singing
on that sunlit day.
I painted in rhythm to a guitar’s strum
My brush did dance, my heart did hum
on that sunlit day.
The joy of the moment was a natural high
But in my heart I wondered why? Wondered where and why.
Where were the sparrows, singing in the trees
Where was the fawn and doe, once grazed by his feet
I searched the sky for a butterfly
Looked hard for a bumblebee,
Looking for a friend of Francis, that was not a human being.
In quiet desperation I lowered my eyes down
While I shifted tiny pebbles with my feet upon the ground.
To find a creeping crawling thing that was not a human being.
where were the sparrows singing in the trees
Where was the fawn and doe, once grazed by his feet
At that moment I heard a welcomed sound
The fluttering beat of wings,
I lifted my eyes and my heart,
What I saw made my heart sing.
Three white doves, Three white doves
Three white doves Three white doves
The first white dove said my name is love,
With a message just for you.
If you just love God above ,
God’s grace will be with you grace shall flow through you.
Three white doves, Three white doves
Three white doves Three white doves
The second white dove said my name is Grace, Have Faith and do believe,
If you just love God above,
Peace will be with you. Peace shall flow through you.
Three white doves, Three white doves
Three white doves Three white doves
The third white dove said my name is peace, Seek and you will find,
If you just love God above,
Peace shalll be with you. Peace shall flow through you
Three white doves, Three white doves
Three white doves Three white doves
