Story Behind the Song
This song was inspired by relationships that have endured and overcome much turmoil and yet are still painful and restrictive at their core. It explores the place where there is the illusion of moving forward in romantic relationship, yet the sad reality of running in place.
Lyrics
TWO STEPS BACK
Hockenberry/Corwin ©1998
Come on in and close the door, so I can hold you
We used to do this so much, before the time flew
Though we've grown rich from being poor
For every step we take, we take two steps back
Although we've been through thick and thin, we keep on going
Braved some storms forgiven sins , the winds are blowing
We find ourselves right here again.. and again
For every step we take, we take two steps back
We keep on climbing that same old hill
Searching in a desert for our hearts to fill
Are we swimming against a receeding tide
For every step we take, we take two steps
Reasons come and seasons go, we're still together
The pain is starting to show, in stormy weather
Have we struck the final blow
For every step we take, we take two steps back
