Story Behind the Song
It started off as a Dave Matthews-esque groove thing but I thought it worked much better with metal. The bridge was me asking what Cisco would do.
There was a period when every songwriter I heard locally had a song about stalking. I decided this one would be mine.
Lyrics
You’re givin’ I’m taken,
this golden image.
A square window and a faint light on.
Put on a long coat, step into the darkness,
watch the taxis as they pass me on the street.
(pre)
Your face is fading in, mine is fading out,
a natural one-way mirror.
The moisture descends, we are washed away,
I’ll become clearer
(chorus)
Just for tonight I’ll be the stranger in the shadows.
I’ll be the face in the mirror you can’t quite see.
I’ll be the sound you can’t quite distinguish.
I’ll be the one to love you unconditionally
Just for tonight.
I love to see you this way, one way, I
could never imagine, never comprehend.
Bedrooms and living rooms illuminate this
curiosity, this painful encounter.
Put on a long coat, step into the shadows,
watch your neighbors as they pass me on the street.
(pre and chorus)
(end over pre chords)
I long to see your face in the shadows.
I long to see your face in the darkness.
I long to see your face in the shadows, your face in the shadows, your face in the darkness with me.
(chorus)
