Story Behind the Song
Mike says:
"Phil Ochs is a huge hero of mine. I'd been playing around with a ballad to him for years, ala his own Pastures of Plenty tribute to Woody Guthrie. But it wasn't coming together. Too didactic, too preachy... Unfortunately, I wonder if old-style balladry can really be pulled off nowadays. Those old songs were just so damn sincere -- it's hard to do it in the age of ironic distance. I blame Bob Dylan.
Anyway, I took a new tack, thinking about Phil's final years, after the dream of the 60's revolution had faded into the self absorbed 70's. Add a little masking to get folks nodding their heads, and there you go.
What can you do with a heart that's been broke? Hmm? You tell me."
Lyrics
What can you do with a heart that's been broke?
Once it's seen it's dreams fly away in smoke?
Can't make it believe, and you can't make it take hope.
What can you do with a heart that's been broke?
What can you do with a heart that's on fire?
Can you tell it to stop needing what it requires?
Can you tell it to just forget the one it desires?
What can you do with a heart that's on fire?
I got this useless thing, and it's pounding inside me,
It doesn't know what it's about.
And I don't have a clue what it's supposed to do,
Sometimes I'd like to tear it out
What can you do with a heart that's been burned?
Can you make it forget all the lessons it's learned?
A heart goes away, you can't make it return
What can you do with a heart that's been burned?
