Story Behind the Song
There was a great old tree infront of the performing arts building on our college campus. I used to to sit there and do homework or strum my guitar. Sometimes, I would share the tree with an artist who would come by and sketch pictures. Sometimes, he would sketch the object of his affections. I began to wonder at the complexity of that task. After all, it requires a great amount of attention to detail; remembering the enticing curve of your lover's neck, or trying to capture the curl of their hair. Those details can be delightful when things are well in the relationship. Details can also sting deeply when two lovers seperate. Our artist is drawing his way through his relationship turmoil.
Lyrics
My pencil pauses, reflecting the heart-ache within,
A memory is all I have to trace.
Your figure, your body, you haunt me day and night.
I dream of you in slumber as I wake.
Pencil sketches all around
Whisper of a memory,
Maybe love it ain't so bad.
Pencil sketch you're all I've got
Hints of your soft beauty
Maybe love ain't so bad.
Now you who laughed in rainstorms lay silent on a page
Black and white of emotions deep within.
Perhaps I could cry if I could hear you laugh again.
But a pencil sketch defies the call to life.
Pencil sketches all around
Whisper of a memory,
Maybe love it ain't so bad.
Pencil sketch you're all I've got
Hints of your soft beauty
Maybe love ain't so bad.
