    Story Behind the Song
A little diddy from my early days in Paris

    Lyrics
    CRAWL
    (Parisian café)
Words and music by Kristian Fjellstad

    Early evening, Gare Du Nord
    Parisian café
    Grumpy waiter, empty glasses
    -another bottle, s'il vous plait
Is she sure they haven’t met before
    ‘round St.Germain Des Prés?
    She stole all his conversation
    from right under his nose
He’d like to say something to get back on top
but he just can’t seem to get close
    to her at all
Aw man, he’d like to see her crawl

    He never did like Bach
but he finds Mozart pretty mean
And like her, he digs Coltrane
And at night he reads Cèline
Nothing like a candle, a joint
and the "Voyage à bout de la nuit"
He ain’t all that easy to figure out
She's trying to make some connection
She just can’t tell what he’s wanting for
if it’s company, sex or affection
    or her soul
Or if he just wants to see her crawl

She offers to pay, gets up
    got to catch a train
Going to Amsterdam for the weekend
    Some exhibition, art from Spain
She’ll be back by the fifth
    perhaps they’ll meet again
He writes down her phone number
and stays to finish his cup
wishes he’d said something to make her stay
brought her home and had her up
    against the wall
Aw, he’d like to see her crawl

    She heads for the station
    gets the metro instead
Stops at St. Michel, buys a book
to spend the week-end with in bed
From a distance she can pick to pieces
at least half of the things he’d said
    She salutes herself, well content
she knows what games to play
Some things are better left unsaid
though she’d really like to stay
    she knows he’ll call
And then she’ll make him crawl

    Early evening, Châtelet
    Parisian café
    Grumpy waiter, empty glasses
    -another bottle, s'il vous plait
    another bottle, s'il vous plait
    Lust and self-righteousness
    a dangerous combination
We all like to indulge ourselves
Don’t you just love that sensation
    of being in control
    When you watch somebody crawl
