Story Behind the Song
This piece was finally finished this year. I added completed drums and fractal noise effects and finished the arrangement. The poem "Grenade" was written in 1995 after seeing a photo of a grimicing young boy holding a grenade. If I find the photo I'll post it here. But it was a very powerful image to me at the time and it left a lasting impression on me.
Soon after I bought hearing Radiohead's "Ok Computer" and decided I too wanted to explore the Mac's text-to-speech in my music. So I used the lyrics to Grenade.
Lyrics
Grenade
by James Brynildsen
I sat and I watched what you did to them,
like them all I do nothing else,
you serve, and stir, such a simple thing,
but you still can't feel any human pulse.
Wash your hands and wish them dead,
This doesn't bother you, it never did,
to see it work or fail with nothing said,
It doesn't really matter when you're just a kid.
Grenade, take it from me, before I wish you away,
Grenade, your arrogance and ignorance, is a game I won't play,
Grenade, like 200 years of rotting wood,
Grenade, your praying and displaying, does me no good.
Where now, do you think you're going,
How the hell can you believe that's true,
Don't you know your ass is showing,
Can't you see that it's not red, white or blue.
There are walls every where I see,
You'll never get around them, they're too far,
Weapons, only weapons buried all around,
In everyone's private, waiting for the cause.
Grenade, take it from me, before I wish you away,
Grenade, your arrogance and ignorance, is a game I won't play,
Grenade, like 200 years of rotting wood,
Grenade, your praying and displaying, does me no good.
