	Story Behind the Song The Reverend Tim Ahrens (then of Bethany UCC, Cleveland) put together 2 character monologues about Mary and Elizabeth for Advent sermons several years ago. "Elizabeth's Song" joins the song "Mary" as musical interpretations of what these women's feelings may have been as both contemplated their miraculous conceptions. In Elizabeth's case, the culture at that time devalued her as a woman as a result of her being unable to bring children into the world. (It's interesting to note, however, that no aspersions appear to have been cast upon Zachariah who may have been equally "to blame" for the couple's childless state!) "Elizabeth's Song" finds the old woman praising God for the miracle of her late-life pregnancy wherein she is able to again hold her head high among her peers. Lyrics Who could imagine? Who would believe this barren woman could now conceive? But God has blessed me. The babe is growin'. No longer empty--God's love is showin'. I thank the Lord for smilin' on me, for bringin' back a woman's dignity. He deemed me worthy and not too old. He showed his power and his control. For God has blessed me. The babe is growin'.
