Story Behind the Song
Vegan Permaculture, an approach to agricultural design emphasizing sustainability and utilizing such notions as forest gardening and diversification of no-till perennial crops, was a second obsession for me while composing this guitar quartet in late 1995. Although no conscious effort was made at cross-fertilization, hindsight (or wishful thinking?) convinces me some leakage did occur. Performing the work requires restringing and retuning all four guitars. Twelve lower strings are tuned to a 10-tone Pythagorean system (up a beatless fifth, down a beatless fourth, repeat 4 times). Twelve high āEā strings are tuned to slightly different pitches in the vicinity of āEā, each related as a prime-number partial (thus constituting a harmonic system) to one of the Pythagorean components.
