    Story Behind the Song
I started out to write a song about how a symbol for such happiness had turned into a symbol of sadness due to my divorce. But I couldn't get past the happy feelings. I guess I've been divorced long enough to have things more in perspective. I can remember the happy times without having them overshadowed by the sad times.

    Lyrics
    MY DIAMOND RING
    By Linda E. McKeeth
    copyright 3/4/02

You called me up early that day and said you'd see me late.
You were picking up my ring, but I would have to wait.
All day long I was jumping up and down, waiting for my diamond ring.

    Chorus:
My diamond ring, so excited to see
My diamond ring, that you picked out for me.
My diamond ring, you are marrying me.

You came over to my house and had that sheepish grin.
Holding something behind your back, I should have known it then.
There was something more to this than just showing me my diamond ring.

I snuggled up close to you and tried to get a peek.
You just started laughing at me and holding it out of reach.
Come on now and let me see. Quit being such a tease.

    Chorus

You made me stop and listen to the things you had to tell.
You didn't want me disappointed, if you hadn't picked out well.
I looked at you and said, "You've got to be kidding. I know it's gonna be swell."

So slowly you handed me that tiny box of white,
And my hands started to tremble as I opened it so slight.
It would be just a moment, and my diamond ring would be in my sight.

    Chorus

When I opened up that box, couldn't believe my eyes.
Heard you saying, "It's the thought that counts," before I realized.
You were waiting for my response, but I was just paralyzed.

I searched my mind for a positive word. Prayed, "Please give me a hint."
Finally thought, "It's unique." That could be my comment.
Didn't come out that way. I said, "Wow, it's sure different."

    Chorus

You started laughing, rolling in the floor, then took a look at me.
I guess then you took pity, gonna free me from my misery.
You slipped the ring out of the box and said, "Look. What do you see?"

I took the ring, looked at it closely. Now the truth was known.
It was a pop-top bent just so and on the top you'd glued a rhinestone.
I slipped it on to my finger and danced to this song.

    Chorus

Then from your pocket you took a ring, as pretty as could be.
You took off that pop-top ring, gave a solitaire diamond to me.
I threw my arms around your neck, and said, "You are marrying me."

    Chorus
