Just yer average tune about a trucker on a run from Tulsa to Graceland, tellin' his troubles to an all-ears waitress in a greasy spoon. |
Label: kammjamm productions
Credits: Written and produced by David Kamm. Rhythm guitar: Tom Bishel. Fake strings, 88-key drums, syntho-bass, pseudo-psteel guitar, (real) Fender Rhodes: David Kamm. Thanks to Tom Bishel for help on the chorus. |
Story Behind the Song
[Engineer's note: As this song has proven to be sort of popular, especially among the institutionalized and the infirm, I decided to clean up the vocal mix for this special October 2001 version.]
A parody I wrote in Summer 2000 for an Elvis-sighting video that I was asked to co-score the musical soundtrack for. There's a scene in the film where the main character and her co-worker (both are Big City types) are driving somewhere near Memphis, and they're smirking as they can't seem to find anything but Country music radio stations. I originally planned to use just a couple of seconds of this song as they paused on a particular country station.  But the film's director liked the story of the song, so I was coerced into making the thing a full song. It's now used as the closing credits theme.
Lyrics
I got a trailer full o' heartache
And a belly full o' beer
A truckstop east of Tulsa
The waitress lends her ear
I tell my tale of sorrow
A life of grindin' gears
A thousand miles to Memphis
A thousand miles of tears
[Chorus:]
King Country, Tennessee
In the land of grace and harmony
And that southern inspiration
Is really all I need
To save me from this misery
Well the highway is a stranger
When all you feel is pain
And all your friends are laughin'
When sunshine turns to rain
And money doesn't mean much
When gray skies fill the blue
A mystery lies in Memphis
But I'm just passin' through...
[Chorus]
[solo]
[Chorus]
