A Charleston-style song your grandmother would love. |
Credits: (c)1975 David Maggin |
Story Behind the Song
As a child, I used to love to listen to old
78rpm dance band records at my grandparents
house. And I guess some of it stuck with me.
I don't recall where the actual idea for this
song came from, but it's based on my memories
of those scratchy, old crooner records.
Actually, I tell a lie; I took the title
from Jim Croce's "Operator", which'd come out
a bit earlier and was one of my favourites at
the time.
Anyroads, Hello Operator was written and
recorded over a weekend in late 1975. I
wasn't able to rouse any interest in any of
my musical compatriats for the song, so I
ended up doing all the instruments--guitars,
drums, bass and vocals (sung through a
proper megaphone)--myself.
So, with apologies to F. Scott...Wacka-do,
Wacka-do!
Lyrics
Gotta call St. Louis
Trans-America
Haven't got a penny
Haven't got a dime...
Hello Operator
Can you spare me a dime
So I can place a call
To that gal of mine;
A real honey pie.
I'll pay you back on Wednesday
Thursday, alright?
I gotta call my baby
Let me know she's alright
Let me call tonight
She's the only girl in the world for me
You-who-who would love her if you could
only see...
Hello Operator
You heard me right
I'm lonely and I'm waiting
To make a call tonight
Let me call tonight.
She's the only girl in the world for me
You-who-who would love her if you could only
see...
Hello Operator
Can you spare me a dime
So I can place a call
To that gal of mine.
Hello Operator
