    Lyrics
Tom was an old sailor who lived by the sea
one day he awoke and found a family
his wife swore she loved him and begged him to stay
but he untied the ropes and he sailed away

"When you came a courtin' with the salt in your hair
I loved you and you told me you thought I was fair
we married bore six kids and you worked on the docks
please don't leave me on this island of salty grey rocks"

"Well I never wanted nothin' but to sail the ocean blue
but now I've been trapped here by the children and you
so I'm goin on my way in my trusty sailin boat"
and he gathered his sack and he gathered his coat

"Well leave us" she cried "and sail far away
you wont be welcomed back here to this little bay
if you love the grey old sea more than your wife
well you may as well go and give it your life"

Strangely enough his old wife was not sad
she smiled as she remembered the gold that he had
she'd hid it from him since the day they were married
and now he has little in the sack that he carries

"Curse you!" he cried when he reached his first port
and realised he had none of the gold he had caught
he was forced to work here in this little old town
and now he's a drunkard of great renown.
