Story Behind the Song
String Trio No. 2
I started composing my String Trio No. 2 after the premiere of the String Trio No. 1 in 1996. The first trio was received with enthusiasm by players and audience alike so I thought I would have a go at a second one, with the hopes of composing a third for a matched set.
I - Flowing
This movement is written in a scherzo/sonata form ABCAB wherein the middle (C) section (not in reference to a birthing method), instead of being a development of the initial themes, introduces two new themes. The first of them is meant to be a humorous imitation of a group of really horrible players, playing out of tune and time. I also used every musical cadential cliche I could think of. At the end of this, what I call, insane section, the players have a hard time finding the right ending notes. But finally they hammer out some unison As and continue into the next thematic section, a pensive cello melody with counterpoint supplied by the viola. The movement closes with a repeat of the opening two themes, slightly enhanced (in different keys) for climactic purposes.
