Story Behind the Song
III - Allegro
The third movement opens with a strong gesture reminiscent of one of the motives found in the first movement. It continues with a rhythmic scheme similar to the first movement, but instead of a 4+3+3 pattern is resolved into a regular 4/4 with accents on the 4/3/3. There is no melody in the first section, only chords and rhythms, until finally the violin and then the viola take their turns.
The opening gesture is heard again followed by a quasi cadenza for cello. This is followed by a well known hymn melody played by viola and surrounded by chaos in the violin and cello. Eventually they all come together to finish the simple hymn phrase and return to the opening section. The movement ends with the 4+3+3 pattern found in the first movement.
