Story Behind the Song
String Trio No. 1
In May of 1992, I heard the impressive Langroise Trio give their first recital in Jewett Auditorium, in Caldwell. After the concert I introduced myself, and, after chatting for awhile, they agreed to perform a piece if I were to write one. I started composing the String Trio No. 1 the next day, and finally finished the music in January 1994. Most of the writing was done during periods of unemployment between gigs and regular jobs, periods in which a daily composing routine could be adhered to without distractions, hence the long gestation time.
I have a fascination for the string quartets of Beethoven, Bartok, and Shostakovich, and was deeply immersed in the study of these composers while writing this piece.
II. Scherzando
The Scherzando follows the typical Classical/Romantic minuet/scherzo construction of scherzo/trio/scherzo: ABA. The A section consists of undulating tones and misplaced accents, somewhat in the minimalist style. The trio is a strange, humorous waltz (marked in the score a little slower; labored, grotesque) reminiscent of Shostakovich.
