    Story Behind the Song
    Company Tour
(A musical depiction of monotony in the workplace)
This piece was written using creative energy left over from the composition of my String Trio No. 1. I started writing Company Tour April 4, 1994 and finished it on May 1. I modeled this music on a piece by the South African composer Kevin Volans called White Man Sleeps, which has been recorded by the Kronos Quartet. Hearing the Kronos recording, I was intrigued by the sounds which Mr. Volans had created. This prompted me to order the score for White Man Sleeps to see how he had organized his piece. After receiving the score (a feat in itself) and analyzing and absorbing what was going on in the music, I used the inspiration brought about by this absorption to compose Company Tour. Although similar in the use of repetition, texture, and odd time signatures, the two pieces are stylistically very different.
The title Company Tour came to me after listening to the finished piece a few times. Although I never visualize pictures or scenes while Im composing, I do like to make up titles or stories to some of my pieces after they are finished based upon how they may be visualized. Here is the scenario for Company Tour.
A person arrives at the reception desk of the company. He/she has begun the job interview process and is being taken on a tour of the company by a person from human resources. As the tour progresses deeper and deeper within the company, and each mechanized department is viewed through a window from a long hallway, the realization of the monotonous nature of the work causes apprehension within the prospective employee. He eventually becomes so distraught that he backtracks and leaves in disgust.
Of course, this little story is only the imaginings of my strange brain. You can make up whatever you want. Or just listen to the music as music. Its your choice.
