    Story Behind the Song
I began writing this song while in the shower and after letting my brother hear a initial draft of it (after having finished my shower and some time later)- which he liked, I decided to finish it up and begin performing it- so he's partly to blaime I'd say. I've performed it on numerous occasions at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica- just enough I would guess so that they didn't have to ask me to no longer play it. I also sent it to Dr. Demento who has played it three times. Having grown up through my college years listening to Dr. Demento, this for me is on the level of winning a Golden Onion award- though on principle I would not at this time be able to attend such an award show because I believe award shows are leading to the fall of our civilization.

The version you can hear here and on the quadruple album of mine that it's on: "Red Beans and Rice and Other Songs of the Dusty Trail", is a live version recorded at McCabe's. It has also appeared on other radio shows around the country. You can visit my website at DougNewman.net for further info. about my stuff.

    Lyrics
    Once I had a tapeworm
He was a friend of mine
One day he poked his head out of my ear
    and said I'm fine
Most of the time he spent his days in my large intestine
    Once I had a tapeworm
He was a friend of mine

One day I went to the doctor
    My tapeworm said hello
My doctor said oh my young man there's something you should know
    That tapeworms aren't good friends
    Somehow you've been mislead
So take this pill four times a day and soon he will be dead

    Chorus:
    Tapeworm tapeworm
Why did you lie to me
    Tapeworm tapeworm
    You're just a parasite I see

I took my pill four times a day
And in the pot he fell
He looked so sad just lying there
As far as I could tell
But I know I won't be too sad
Nor will I start to cry
For all the stories he told me
    Where only tapeworm lies

    Chorus

And all the stories you told me
    Where only your tapeworm lies
    Goodbye little tapeworm
