Story Behind the Song
This song started in a hotel in Medord, OR during the mixing of the "SPIRIT of the AUDIO" CD.I played this pretty light, poppy song called HOLIDAY for Rob on one of the guitars we had packed in the room. Rob liked it and asked if he could work on it...
A couple months later, Rob sent a demo of his vision for the song to me-it was a much heavier treatment and rather than centering around a trip to the ocean now was focused lyrically around a trip to war torn Lebanon.
We decieded to change from 'Lebanon' to 'Babylon' due to the changing political climate, so I asked Rob to write the lyrics in that direction while I puzzled over the arrangement. What we envisioned was something as heavy as a Roman Army-metaphorically speaking.
As we neared the recording date, we thought that a song inside the song would be cool, as we both like music that holds a few surprises.
Rob asked me to write something about 'King Harrod of Judea and his Alabastar Tub' for the chord/melody structure of the 'song within the song', which was a really interesting combination of words. Rob wanted that section to sound, "...drugged out...like shooting up would feel..." and I saw it as a big, emotionally dynamic piece.
Rob guided Bob, our engineer during the tracking of the drums for this section and the resulting percusion sounds like cannon blasts played underwater, which really captured the spirit of it.
Both Jake and Shawn play on this song and we were extremely happy with the meshing of the two styles-they really complimented eachother. Instrumentally, it was the first time I think we captured how we all play when uninhibited.
Tracking wise, it was the most challenging of the songs for the session. It really highlights how we all work-my focus being on the basic song and arrangement, Robs strengths being tracking, instrumentation and structure and Jake being able to create the tonality each peice needs. As for Shawn, he is just pure combustive creativity.
Thanks to Dave Soiseth on Trumpet and Heather Hutton on Violin.
Lyrics
A holiday in Babylon,
Could be a gas, would be so fun.
There's nothing I would rather do,
Than work the Middle East with you.
A Babylonian retreat,
With you along, would be complete.
On the palace grounds we'd stroll,
To watch the hanging garden grow.
And nothing else would matter there.
Oh Let's All Go
on Holiday.
A visit down to Palestine,
Most likely wouldn't take much time.
Catch a Hebrew sunset there,
I doubt the Roman Guard would care.
We'd hail a passing chariot
and cruise down on the Gaza strip.
Cuddle under starlit night,
book the last room at the inn that night.
I think you know just what I mean.
Oh Let's All Go
on Holiday.
Oh Let's All Go
on Holiday.
Holiday.
Holiday.
Harried King Harod.
the King of Judea had an Alabastar Tub.
Couldn't wash away the blood
Canceled the New Show.
Stepped on his Ego.
Built a Palace because he could.
Put it up in Hollywood
Hold me.
Hold me.
Never let me go.
A Holiday in Babylon,
Could be a gas, would be so fun.
There's nothing I would rather do,
Than work the Middle East with you.
If you and I could find a way.
You and I could a way.
Holiday.
Holiday.
