Story Behind the Song
A work in progress. (I sure hope so anyway. Sheesh.)
One of those cases where the first draft of the lyrics seemed to fit with a vague musical idea I happened to have at around the same time. The lyrics come from a period where I was being down on myself for having always been so eager to please. (The key to this one I think is the whiny tone of the lyrics).
The bass part in the verses is basically the bass part for the chorus sloppily notated and flipped upside down.
Initially this one wasn't chosen for the (forever forthcoming) Inanimate album, but I thought that "Harmless" and "Lifeless" made more sense in context of each other.
Unfortunately I goofed. Having one sung by me, and the other sung by Rose only serves to obscure the idea of them both being from the same view point.
Lyrics
Harmless
Trevor Thompson
Why, oh, why am I the spineless wimp that I am?
I'm only intimidated into being nice to everyone
But niceness never got me anything I ever wanted
I'd rather be a psychopathic hoodlum just for once
Why, oh, why must I always be so harmless?
Am I destined to always be so harmless?
It's human nature to need to feel a sense of belonging
But I've never belonged to anything before in my life
And although I know I'll never carry the idea through
To be feared and hated instead would be nice
Why, oh, why must I always be so harmless?
Am I destined to always be so harmless?
(outside of my sexual fantasies)
I pass closed store windows
How easy could it be to smash them in?
I pass by hordes of people
How easy would it be to pull out a gun?
