Story Behind the Song
I grew up in a very small town in New Zealand, Thames was a major goldmining town in the late 1800's and still has a wonderful historic "air" about it even now. I left there when I was around 8years old so memories of Thames became my "halcion days" later in life.
Lyrics
When I Was A Boy (Larry Killip) (c) 2002
Running in the sun,
Chasing a plane
picking up paper and blue cellophane
That's when I, that's when I,
Was a boy
With a big long stick,
Under the eaves
Knocking off beesnests my friend and me,
that's when I, that's when I,
Was a boy
With imaginary horses we'd ride into the sun,
My friend and I, forever young,
With no let up 'till day was done
That's when I was a boy
When rain was rain and sun was sun
days were long and we would run
That's when I, that's when I was a boy
Milk in the billy out at the gate
The ice cream man was never late
Life was complete and the world was great,
that's when I was a boy
Oh the wonder of it all
inthat sleepy little town
There was gold in them hills and smiles not frowns
That's when I, that's when I was a boy
Running in the sun,
Chasing a plane
picking up paper and blue cellophane
That's when I, that's when I,
Was a boy
