Ostensibly a vehicle for RKO Radio's new comedy duo Wally Brown and Alan Carney, Seven Days Ashore actually casts Brown & Carney in subordinate roles. The plotline is carried by furloughed sailor Dan Arland (Gordon Oliver), who while docked in San Francisco gets mixed up with three amorous females. Hoping to avoid breach-of-promise suits from two of the girls, Arland palms them off to his pals Monty (Brown) and Orville (Carney), while he devotes his time to debutante Annabelle (played by future news journalist Elaine Shepard). One of the "castaway" girls is portrayed by Virginia Mayo, on the verge of stardom. Musical relief is provided by Dooley Wilson ("Sam" in Casablanca), Freddie Slack and His Orchestra, and the zany "corn aggregation" led by Freddie "Schnickelfritz" Fisher.

    Story Behind the Song
I got the idea for the title and premise from a movie poster at Boagrt's in Santa Barbara:

Merchant marines help their shipmate remove himself from the romantic clutches of two female violinists.

    Lyrics
    Seven Days Ashore

One day I joined the traveling circus, and sailed across the sea
Ports of call I don’t recall, all sorts of freakery
Love was lost and love was found, and many ties were bound
Part of the act was to stay intact, we had our lines down

    Seven days ashore
    Just couldn’t take anymore
    Had to get away

Under the big top was not the last stop, on a typical Friday night
But we gave it our all and kept ‘em enthralled, three rings of hobo delight
The barker’s yell was our last call, as we sailed into the sun
So far from home, destination unknown, the show must go on

    Seven days ashore
    Just couldn’t take anymore
    Had to get away

Away to find a way to live, Away to find a way to give,
Away what we have found to be the truth

I once loved an acrobat, who floated through the air
She left me for some clown act, Cuz I combed the bearded ladies hair
You see I am just a fisherman, without luxury of net
So strike up the band and play your hand, We’re not there just yet

    Seven days ashore
    Just couldn’t take anymore
    Had to get away

Away to find a way to live, Away to find a way to give,
Away what we have found to be the truth
