Story Behind the Song
Another survivor from the pile of the misfits. I originally wrote this song while sitting in Sociology Class at the University of Washington. My professor was explaining how people are classified into socio-economic classes (lower, lower middle, middle, upper middle, lower upper etc.) and then she delivered the big whammy - less than 3% of Americans ever exceed the class they are born into. Unfortunately, my socio-economic DNA was created by two uneducated parents who struggled to get and stay in the lower middle class.
So much for the American Dream. Naturally, I considered the impact of my new social destiny on my love life and "There Goes My Girl" was born.
After 22 years of stuggle to get out of the pile of the misfits, "There Goes My Girl" was the last song added to this album. And me? Well, I am one of the 3% who did make it and I'm happy to say that I've chosen to be a member of the only socio-economic class that matters - Humanity.
Lyrics
My life's been changing, rearranging my perspectives;
sometimes it's hard to see my objectives.
All these social classes divided into sections,
makes it hard for me to make selections.
There goes my girl or I guess she use to be.
She got tired of making it with me.
And all those things that I thought I had to be.
There goes my girl or I guess she use to be, my girl, yeah she use to be, my girl, yeah she use to be, my girl.
Sometimes I wonder if I'll make it to the top,
With all these things I am and all these things I'm not.
Will I be labeled, as the man who almost made it?
I tried so hard but I just couldn't take it.
There goes my girl or I guess she use to be.
She got tired of making it with me.
And all those things that I thought I had to be.
There goes my girl or I guess she use to be, my girl, yeah she use to be, my girl, yeah she use to be, my girl.
