Story Behind the Song
A year and a few days ago our nation suffered a tragedy at the hands of others. We were all shocked by those events and moved by the heroism and outpour of support throughout our nation in the days, weeks and months that followed.
Across the nation every songwriter felt the desire to capture what they and others around them were feeling. As the songwriter for OVERLAND I was encouraged by the guys in the band to do the same. And like so many other songwriters I had the desire to do so. However, I failed. I couldn't find the words and the music to express it.
To paraphrase Sir Paul McCartney who once said in an interview I had seen: ...All of the great songs are out there floating around and every so often you are able to reach out and grab one and make it your own. A little over a week ago, on a sleepless night (which is when I do most of my songwriting, on sleepless nights), this song, "Long Way To Heaven" came to me. I say it came to me because unlike many of the songs I've written that take several sleepless nights to find all the right words, music and feel, this one hit me all at once. When it did, it flowed out on to the paper with no coxing from me what so ever.
Now I don't know if this is a "great song". But this one is ours. We present it to you as our tribute in honor of the events of 9/11.
Please feel free to share this song with your family and friends.
Lyrics
Verse 1:
I see you standing in the doorway,
Can’t decide if you’re in or out.
So many questions left unanswered,
So many answers we’ve forgot.
They say the people need a hero,
Someone who can help us through.
Take a look at those around you,
Your hero is standing next to you.
Chorus:
And it’s a, Long Way To Heaven,
A Short Ride To Hell.
Let Me Walk Along Beside You,
Together We Can Make It Through.
Verse 2:
Though you may not be my brother,
Or consider me a friend.
You still owe it to yourself,
To let me be just who I am.
‘Cause there are those who would take our freedom,
And destroy our way of life.
So now we must to stand together,
For our individual rights.
Chorus:
And it’s a, Long Way To Heaven,
A Short Ride To Hell.
Come and walk along beside me,
Together We Can Make It Through.
(Repeat and Ad Lib to END)
And it’s a, Long Way To Heaven,
A Short Ride To Hell.
Let Me Walk Along Beside You,
Together We Can Make It Through.
