Lyrics
Dalton’s Dream
I got on a train this mornin’ and found myself a seat
and tried to pass the time with my memories
I was soon lost deep in thought, until my mood turned dark and blue
recalling all the faces of the people that I knew
With misted eyes into an open room I stared
the day crew had just come in, all the regulars were there
we followed our routines through many an afternoon
and laughed our way through the days from August back to June
Sometimes I dream of bright blue mornings,
picnics and softball teams
and sometimes I dream I’m falling,
and I’m not sure what it means
Sometimes I wake up wonderin’
about where I’ve been and the things I’ve seen,
and sometimes I just wish
I didn’t have to dream...
Walter liked to come in early, he had an office down the hall
where he showed his familys’ pictures, and taped them to the wall
his little girl was Katy, she’ll be turning five this year
daddy’s gonna miss the party, she taped his picture to her mirror
There was Emily, so quiet, from the floor just on e above
we almost dated once, but she was too smart for my love
and the new kid with the mail cart, every day at two
who politely checked and said hello every time that he passed through
Mr Taylor was our janitor, he’d been one all his life
and he’d glad ly tell you stories of when he was twenty five
when he wasn’t cleaning something, he spent his time down at the tracks
you knw he won and lost some fortunes, but he won’t be going back
Sometimes I dream of bright blue mornings,
picnics and softball teams
and sometimes I dream I’m falling,
and I’m not sure what it means
Sometimes I wake up wonderin’
about where I’ve been and the things I’ve seen,
and sometimes I just wish
I didn’t have to dream...
It was easy enough to add things up when you saw them in black and white
and it was easy enough for any one of us to tell you wrong from right
we didn’t think about the world outside, until our shift was through
and we went out the doors to Wall Street and drifted up the avenue
No matter how many years might p ass, or how old I may live to get
my mind might start to slip sometimes, and I may have some regrets
but I’d give every single dollar that I might ever make
if we could sit around that office once, just for one more day
Sometimes I dream of bright blue m ornings,
picnics and softball teams
and sometimes I dream I’m falling,
and I’m not sure what it means
Sometimes I wake up wonderin’
about where I’ve been and the things I’ve seen,
and sometimes I just wish
I didn’t have to dream...
eh
