Story Behind the Song
This song is about looking back on the impact of Lyndon Johnson's "Great Society" programs (that's welfare, Jack) forty years after their controversial beginning. More importantly it addresses the deeper issue behind federal programs like welfare, namely elitism. The notion that the government has a better understanding of what's best for its citizens than the citizens themselves.
Lyrics
the dependency, that you have wrought
is just testimony, to the nature of...
...the absurdity, of your thinking
no one else, is capable?
time will cut you and everything
you stand for to pieces
the weight of your rhetoric crumbles
with time
please help us, feed us
our instinct, does not apply
nurture us, till we're soft
educate us with drivel
sell us
ignore our values, and subjugate our personalities
all i can say to you: don't have to - don't ever wanna think
at least, they can't take my pride away from me
forty years of failure, great society
