Story Behind the Song
I wrote "Back Home" based on a fear I have of losing the normalcy of home when and if I ever pursue a successful musical career. I always assumed that it would be amazing when you're all caught up in the initial chase of success, but I know myself and at some point I would want to come home. The fear, and the topic of the song really, is coming home and realizing that you not only made a choice to pursue that success, but that you really sacrificed what you had and you'll never get it back again. Then the question arises... was it worth it? What's really important in life? The answer is your home, your friends and family. Without them you're really alone and that's the feeling portrayed in the song. When he returns everything still looks the same but he doesn't feel as though he belongs there. It's as if he isn't welcome there anymore. He's not a part of the community that made him who he is. A lot of my songs deal with change but this one touches on a bittersweet topic. I doubt I'll ever become famous, but if I do I hope that I can avoid the situation portrayed in this tune. On a side note it's one of my favorite tunes because it's different than a lot of my other tunes, I get to play the harmonica on it, and there is a lot of emotional change throughout the song (demonstrated through lyrics, vocal melodies, and volume dynamics).
