"What Goes On" is a perfect example of the catchy and melodic folk rock/pop sound Lyle is known for. It's the first track off his debut CD "Left Standing." |

Story Behind the Song
"What Goes On" barely squeaked its way onto the album. I wrote it a week before Andy and I got together to do the drum tracks in March and April [2002]. It's really one of the first songs that I've written that I knew exactly what I wanted instrumentation wise. When I wrote the song I had pretty much planned everything out in my head that night. There were a few changes here and there thanks to Andy, Aaron, and Joe, but I was surprised at how much the song ended up sounding like I had planned. I'm usually very up in the air about things like that. I think the song really came together and is one of the strongest tracks on "Left Standing."
The song's talking about how cheap people's relationships can be when you're playing the "bar/club game." There are lines in the song that portray how cold and unreal the whole situation is. It's coming from the perspective of someone who sees how fake it all is but at the same time can't seem to find anyone else who responds to anything besides the standard pick-up procedure. The song is also driven somewhat by a very march-like drumbeat that, if you want to get analytical, sort of symbolizes that "ants marching" mentality of the dating scene.
On a less serious level it's just a fun song to play and lots of people seem to enjoy it on different levels. I don't usually try to get really deep with meanings or explanations. It'll mean something different for each person... or perhaps it'll mean nothing at all besides a tune to sing along with on your way home from work.
