    Story Behind the Song
It was saturday night/sunday early morning after the tragic events of September 11th. I couldn't make any sense of it; and the sight haunted me, as I had watched it from my bedroom window, in Greenwich Village. I had been glued to the TV and radio ever si nce that tuesday, whenever I wasn't volunteering, or working on a fundraiser I had begun. I couldn't sleep. And I was afraid in a way I don't think I've ever been. I started writing about what it all meant to me...the loss, the horror, and the spirit of unity. Everywhere I was hearing that the enemy had tried to rob us of our freedom, and justice. I saw the Towers as the symbols of those things, and the rest flowed. It was written in a few hours.

    Lyrics
Two Proud Brothers, straight and tall
    Fair, and skyward soaring
    Liberty, and Justice For All
    Hit without a warning
From my window in the light of day
One by one I watched them fall
First came Liberty, then came Justice
    On a mid September morn
On a mid Sep tember morn

    Rachael’s weeping for her children
Yea, because they are no more
And in this wreckage that we call our hearts
Is where the grapes of wrath are stored
And on the TV, and on the radio
I hear them say that we’re at war
For our Liberty, and our J ustice
    Threatened that September morn
    On a mid September morn

So I turn to my Bible
And there’s ‘an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’
But I know that I must ‘turn the other cheek’
    Which one’s the truth?

    Tireless souls and calloused hands
Work on t he pile at Ground Zero
And all across our promised land
    Are the nameless heroes
    Dead and living, we’re united
In a way we’ve never known
For our Liberty, and our Justice
    They cannot be overthrown,
    No, they cannot be overthrown

And from the stench of smok e and ashes
I know the phoenix surely rises like the dawning of the day
    And every candle’s a reminder
    “Be not afraid”

Two Proud Brothers, once they stood
    With the thousands missing
But the shedding of their blood
    Has been a martyr’s christening
For we were stronger than the terror
That befell us on that day
For WE are Liberty, and WE are Justice
Land of the free, home of the brave
Land of the free, home of the brave
