Story Behind the Song
These 5 selections are from Lutesuite no. 1 is the earliest composition for lute that has survived to the present. It is thought to have been written between 1707-1717. The Prelude is both melodically and harmonically rich with a dramatic opening passages call and response effect. The Fugue is constructed with beautiful effects as each line of the three voices enters and gracefully exits. The Fugue is arguably the most difficult technically to play. The Allemande was a type of dance that has no been turned into a virtuosic instrumental piece. It is composed using three motives or phrases which are used as building blocks to create this piece. The Sarabande is a slower paced and more harmonically rich section of the suite. It is interesting how he seems to expand time with the way he plays around with the downbeats of the song. The Bouree is also a dance that is written in two part counterpoint. This is one of the most popular works of Bach for the guitar.
