"Absent Without Leave" depicts a scene in which a seemingly desperate and despondent man lies brooding in a seedy hotel room. His thoughts wander through snapshots of his life. He occasionally wonders if its all just a dream anyway. The last part of the scene finds the man snapping out of his trance as he hears footsteps approaching the door of his room. He apparently knows that danger is just outside the door. We are left to assume that a climactic confrontation will soon take place and the "hero" acknowledges to himself that he will probably not survive it. The story does not reveal either the antagonist or the reason for their existence.

    Lyrics
ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE BY JOHN MOOSSA copyright 2001

It was midnight in the land of poison honey
The air hung heavy hot and still
A brooding man lay staring at the ceiling
    Of a rundown old hotel
The race to win the money with no hassle
Was coming quickly to an end
There was no light and no true devoted damsel
No sack of riches ‘round the bend
    Chorus
I don’t remember how it all got started
Maybe it came down from a dream
They say that home is where the heart is
My heart is absent without leave
The kiss of fate revealed itself as random
As plain as day for all to see
They ‘d made some plans that time would soon abandon
Regrets for thoughts tossed out too freely
He heard some folks say soon there’d be a shakeup
No telling where the cut will come
Desperate times will call for desperate measures
And he thought he knew of some

    REPEAT CHORUS
There was a time when he had been to college
But that was far off long ago
He’d thought he’d learned a little bit of knowledge
But the more you learn the less you know
So late at night there was the sound of footprints
    Coming closer to the door
The brooding man came quickly to his senses
And made a beeline for the floor

This situation is getting kind of hairy
I don’t know how much time I’ve got to live
I would give my soul for one more night with Mary
If I had one left to give
