Story Behind the Song
There is quite a story behind the parent work; full notes on this can be found on the composer's website - the direct link is http://www.neptunethemystic.co.uk/arcad.htm
The main musical basis of the parent work is the plainsong 'Dies Irae' chant, which appears in various guises and arrangements, mostly with a gentle and sublime quality. The stormy nature of the section that forms the present work is in marked contrast with most of the rest of the parent work, in which a selection of the mystical sayings of the historical Jesus are presented by the choir.
The cipher text used in the lyrics is one of the many things that are explained in the Composer's notes on the parent work.
Lyrics
(What is in square brackets is the Composer's insertion.)
1. (stormy)
Dies irae, dies illa, Solvet saeclum in favilla,
Teste David cum Sybilla.
Quantus tremor est futurus, Quando Judex est venturus,
Cuncta stricte discussurus, cuncta stricte discussurus!
2. (in canon -- Bach's Passion Chorale tune)
I vow to thee, my leader, to be at one with thee.
Upon all suff'ring beings, O shine compassionate light!
And when we oft-times falter, by day or depth of night,
Impart upon us blessings, that we may know our end. -- (new, original, words)
3. (simultaneous themes)
Men: repeat of Passion Chorale (I vow to thee...)
Women: SOLIS SACERDOTIBUS, ARCAM DEI TANGO, IESU.
A DAGOBERT II ROI ET A SION EST CE TRESOR ET IL EST LA MORT.
ARCAM DEI TANGO, IESU. ET IN ARCADIA EGO[, EGO SUM]. -- (cipher text)
4. (stormy)
Dies irae, dies illa, Solvet saeclum in favilla,
Teste David cum Sybilla.
Tuba mirum spargens sonum, Per sepulchra regionum,
Coget omnes ante thronum, coget omnes ante thronum.
